Published: 11/02/2015 by Alexander Rose
Now in its second year, this prestigious competition was established by Alexander Rose, one of the leading outdoor furniture manufacturers in Europe. For 2015, the competition has been further developed to encourage young designers to take up careers in the outdoor leisure industry which generates in excess of £960m per annum to the UK economy.
Working closely with Universities across the UK, Alexander Rose’s aim is to encourage young designers to engage with industry-based projects.
Borge Leth, Managing Director of Alexander Rose, says: ‘The competition will provide students with substantial real work experience and the opportunity to win substantial prize money. It also gives them a chance to develop a long term professional design career in a major UK industry’.
The competition is open to all students on full time BA, BSc and Postgraduate Furniture, 3D,Product Design, Architecture and Interior Design Courses in the UK. It provides an opportunity for young designers to explore creative ideas for all outdoor leisure products – furniture, BBQs, Parasols, Gazebos etc - for use in a domestic or commercial environment. The students are invited to examine and consider aesthetic, ergonomic, sustainable and commercial factors in relation to their proposed design.
The Judges, who include Diarmuid Gavin, Chelsea Flower Show Gold Winner, will be looking for exciting and creative new ideas, innovative use of technology and market sector suitability.
The THREE designs that are deemed to fulfil the brief in the most creative way will be nominated for the substantial prizes that are available to be won, including £1000 for the Gold Winner and the opportunity to see their design put into production.
Alan Morley, Head of Design at Alexander Rose comments: ‘We are delighted to work with young designers, helping them to refine their ideas and introduce them to the design manufacturing process. The competition has provided Alexander Rose with a tremendous resource of some of the most creative emerging talent in the country and we are keen to help them realise their design ideas. This collaboration is good for our industry, our company, the universities and the students.'
The three top winning designs along with a selection of all the other entries received will be unveiled at SOLEX 2015.
